We are proud to support some truly extraordinary research studies that promise to transform the future of global health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today it is my honor to introduce a study that has nothing to do with any of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have received an advance preview of a manuscript by my Terran colleague Nicole Deflaux, software engineer and data scientist at Verily, who has in the past authored some extremely useful resources for doing data science in Terra, ranging from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.terra.bio\/#workspaces\/help-gatk\/Terra%20Notebooks%20Playground\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notebooks Playground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.terra.bio\/#workspaces\/verily-metis\/Site-selection-tool-for-vaccine-trial-planning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">site selection tool for vaccine trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this latest project, Nicole carried out a totally rigorous analysis of the trajectory of startled cats, based on a highly respected data source,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> i.e.<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U_XREUMOAU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this compilation of cat videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on YouTube. Crucially, she used the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Gibbsdavidl\/CatterPlots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CatterPlots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> package by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Gibbsdavidl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David L Gibbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to generate figures, with results that border on cat-ception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1250\" src=\"https:\/\/terra.bio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/cat-ception.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"955\" height=\"513\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis is well documented and fully reproducible in Jupyter notebook form, and you know this is a community-oriented project because there is both a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/DataBiosphere\/terra-example-notebooks\/blob\/main\/analysis-of-felis-catus-behavior\/python_analysis_of_felis_catus_behavior.ipynb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Python version<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/DataBiosphere\/terra-example-notebooks\/blob\/main\/analysis-of-felis-catus-behavior\/r_analysis_of_felis_catus_behavior.ipynb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R version<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0You can also enjoy these notebooks in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.terra.bio\/#workspaces\/verily-terra-solutions\/analysis-of-felis-catus-behavior\/notebooks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public Terra workspace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reactions from individuals polled anonymously on bioinformatics twitter and reddit include &#8220;I enjoyed reviewing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U_XREUMOAU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the original data sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, &#8220;I would have used deep learning&#8221;, and &#8220;Why isn&#8217;t this written in Rust?&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat enthusiasts will undoubtedly be looking forward to the study\u2019s planned follow-up, which will investigate the impact of air resistance and breed fluffiness in determining feline trajectories, and also something about terminal velocity.
